Lets start with this basic statement: Dubai is HOT and
HUMID! We arrived on Emirates Airlines here in Dubai today. Once again we flew
on an Airbus A380, our personal favorite way to travel long distances. I am not
sure if I am getting jaded, but I actually thought the A380 on Singapore
Airlines was better configured than the Emirates A380. We did like the bar with
seating on the Emirates upper deck. Actually I like the idea of drinking while
being strapped into your seat, it does make for a certain degree of security.
No falling of bar stools for us at 32,000 feet. Upon arrival we walked through
the ultra modern well run terminal. I remarked “The weather was not much
different from Los Angeles”. Cathy reminded me we were still in an
air-conditioned terminal. As soon as we went outside we were hit by the heat
and humidity. All you can do is give in and accept that you weren’t going to be
dry.
Our driver drove us to our hotel in old Dubai. No 7 star
hotel for us, we wanted to be among the natives. We quickly discovered there
are no natives in Dubai. Only guest workers from Bangladesh, India, Pakistan
and other 3rd world countries can be found. All the natives have left for cooler climates.
Here in Dubai, the main discussion appears to be about the
price of gold and what kind of wine you want to drink. This is a VERY liberal
Muslim Country. Our hotel is old, has excellent air-conditioning and wifi. It apparently has a no hooker unless you pay in cash policy. As we were checking in a man was trying to check-in with no luggage and a much younger women with a body that was enhanced and exposed. The desk manager refused them explaining cash only and much more than he wanted to pay. They took our Amex Card. Cathy's natural modesty allowed me to charge our room. The Souk where we are staying is on the creek that separates
old Dubai from New Dubai. This old area is like a giant outdoor bazaar, no
air-conditioning in these stalls, just lots of goods for sale.
I finally got my iPhone unlocked, and bought a local SIM
card, I feel like a real Dubain now. We ate at our hotel, and had an excellent
Indian dinner of Tandoori Lobster and Shrimp. I am always dubious of ordering
fish in India, so it was good to get it here.
Tomorrow we start to explore the old city of Dubai (which to
Cathy means shopping at the Gold Souk). I am sure we see lots of the city
(hopefully looking through windows from air-conditioned cars or rooms). The weather for tomorrow is HOT and Humid, actually, apparently the weather for every day is Hot and Humid.
